When did you publish your website ? It can take the search engines such as google a few weeks to find your site. what is your site address ?

my site is not on the internet even though it says its published, it comes up saying does not exist, this is really annoying as i wanted it up for the weekend and i've already linked it to all my adverts, i paid more instead of the cheaper website builders as i thought it would be better

Hello - After my first competition I had all these entries, which included email addresses. By doing this, gives you get a list which you can use to emarket by sending a news letter or other promotional material. I emailed my entries to say they were not sucssesful but as a thank you for entering they get 10% of their first purchase.

I have used Mail Chimp to set up an emarketing campaign. you can send 500 emails for free. I am now running my August Competition which am promoting through Loquax and other competition websites.

My unique visitor rate has shot up.

How to optimise your website

Search engine optimisation isn’t just about the metatags and links. It’s important to use your keywords to create the right content to optimise your website and allow Google, Yahoo, Bing and other search engines to recognise which search results you want it included in.

We’ve put together a quick guide to give you a better understanding

Keyword density

Use your selected relevant keywords or phrases frequently in your copy, search engines will pick up the words or phrases which are relevant to your website.

Be careful you don’t get carried away and overuse the keywords, for every one hundred words you should have at least two relevant keywords.

Headings and H tags

Search engines place more emphasis on headings - the text which goes between the < H1 >, < H2 > and the < H3 > tags – you can really pack your text with keywords but make sure it doesn’t end up sounding strange.

Using keywords in links

Linking to other pages within your website will help to boost your pages rankings, use the keyword you are targeting on that page as your link text.

Search engines like keywords to be near the top of the page, be careful you don’t fall into the trap of creating links at the top of your page as these can be distracting and in some cases the user can click off the page before they have even read it.

Running a competition is an effective way of promoting your website, creating new links and increasing the number of visitors.

Susann Akers at www.highheel-shoes.com recently ran a competition which attractedover 1000 entrants and new visitors to the High Heel Shoes website.

Here are a few tips to deliver a successful competition campaign

Choose a relevant prize
It’s important that the prize promotes the products / services you offer on your website. Somake sure it's relevant remember all of your promotion will relate to the prize so it's vital it ties in with your website.

Decide how visitors will enter the competition
Make it simple for people to enter your competition. You can ask entrants to submit details or ask them to answer a simple question. Make it too difficult and people will be less likely to enter.

Consider logistics
Depending on the prize, can you post it? Do you want to post it outside of the UK? Do you need to purchase packaging to ship it? Is the prize a collect only? Consider all aspects of your prize before you launch the competition.

Set a reasonable closing date
When you launch a competition set a reasonable closing date enough time for you to promote it, get traffic, and get entrants.

Write terms and conditions
With every competition you need a set of terms and conditions to outline the competition rules who the competition is open to and when the competition closes

Promote, promote, promote!
Create a page on your website and fill it with rich content about your website its products and your competition offer. Write a ‘Competition’ press release for blogs, forums and local / regional news papers; don't forget to include your website address. This is your opportunity to shout about your website and receive a number of links and potential new customers.

Tip. Don't forget a competition can give you a great deal of PR mileage promoting the competition and the winners story.

Thanks to some advice from Elaine I have been running a competition to win a free pair of shoes. Have a look at

I advertised the competition on some competition websites and the response has been amazing. I expect to have a 1000 unique visits by the end of July. Normally takes me two months to get that many !. It hasn't generated any sales yet but I now have an up to date list of people I can send mails shots and news letters to which hopefully will generate the sales that I really want.

I get script errors as well - depending on where I am in the process - if I have to log out, sometimes I lose the work I have done. And at 11.30 in the evening, its hot and muggy and nothing is working and that dammed cursor keeps worring round ..........

I am afraid I did rant a bit in my post to them.

Hi Susann you are not alone with this. Every time I try to update my stock levels I get a running script error which means I have to log out and then sign back in again, this also happens when I try to change my cutomised email on the e-shop online payment system.

I have called them but still waiting for a reply so lets just hope its a bug they can fix as I am getting pretty tired of logging in and out

Very Very Slow to upload

I have been trying to load shoes this evening onto my site - so far it has taken me 40 minutes to load one pair. When ever I click onto edit or try to load a photo it can take 4 to 5 minutes to load up with me giving up and logging out and then logging back in .

I have loads to do on the site and the problem seems to be getting worse. I have a brand new lap top with windows 7. Does anyone else have this problem : (

Use Directories

Directories link to thousands of businesses across the web
Submit your website to generate new links

Submit articles

Content-driven sites and online newsletters use article submission websites to gather content
Submit keyword and link-rich articles for publishers to pick up
Remember to set up a Google alert

Using social media

Social networking sites provide useful ways of generating links
Creating a profile will generate another link to your website
Wiki sites can also be useful for link generation

Hi Anna

I have only been doing this for just over 12months and doing all the optimisayion my self. There is going to come a time when I will have to pay people to do it for me as don't really have the in depth knowledge. There is a wealth of free info out there on google. You just need to spend the time to look.

Social networking seems to be a big thing -p face book, twitter and linkedin ( I am on them all ) and links - links are very inportant so I have been told. By the way when ever you reply to anyone on line always put you web address on and a link to your site. highlight your webaddress and click the globe thingy on the tool bar.

Hi there Yes, there is someone out here. To be honest, you are way ahead of me. I built my site and am new to this whole business. I downloaded the site optimision guide and tried to put useful info on each of my pages, but there it ends. I just paid google to sit at the top of searches for tilers in my area for 31 days to see what that brings. We are a new business, so generating leads is a whole new experience.
